  1. Clone Virtual Servers

We'd like to have a feature in OnApp that allows for cloning servers. Every other virtualization solution offers this. The basic workflow would be:

    1. Go to the Virtual Machine details page

    2. Click on Tools > VS Options > Clone Virtual Server

    3. Select the new settings for the new Virtual Server (hostname, IPs, etc)

    4. The server is cloned under the same user's account so now the user has two identical servers except for hostname and IPs and whatever other specs he chose to change (CPUs, hard disk space).

The current workflow is too cumbersome. We have to…

  2. Thin provisioning support

The way OnApp's VM's work does not provide the possibility to use real thin provisioning because the removed files from the thin provisioned sectors are not actually marked as free on the storage end and they continue to keep it locked. That doesn't allow us to migrate all our shared servers to OnApp as lots of SSD space will be wasted due to OnApp not supporting the exposal of the DISCARD command to virtual machines.

There are many storage systems out there which provide a block device (e.g. /dev/sdc) on the host, which supports the DISCARD (aka ATA TRIM) command.…

Our development team is working to support TRIM for new and existing VS’s on KVM and XEN Compute Resources. TRIM will be configurable on the DataStore level. It will be available in one of the upcoming edge releases ready for preview.
The underlying storage should support TRIM or Thin Provisioning, check this doc https://docs.onapp.com/misc/logical-volume-management-lvm/discards-for-lvm-level-thin-provisioning.

Depending on the feedback, the functionality can be changed.

  3. Advanced monitoring

Functionality to get, keep and show in real time the stats from the compute resource

    Compute resource level:

    - CPU: Total Available & Total Utilized
    - Memory: Total Available, Total Utilized, Ballooning amount

    Virtual Server level:

    - CPU: Total Utilized on the hypervisors
    - Memory: Total Utilized on the hypervisors.

Ability to select metrics and period for which to show it.

  4. Full Backup Download

Ability to create, download and upload full VM backups for multiple reasons.

On the one hand, if a new OnApp version is released, we would like to download and keep the necessary VMs safe and then upload them again to the new version.

On the other hand, our customers could kepp their VMs safe wherever they want without the need to trust our backup systems fully.

  5. XEN to KVM migration

Possibility to migrate a Virtual Server from XEN to KVM as KVM is having more features and usually showing better performance.

  6. Object storage

Object storage as a service. All new web apps are using object storage. Would be an easy sell to end users.

  7. Firewall Groups

Create the templates of firewall rules and let the templates be arranged into groups. The groups can be later applied to virtual machines.

  8. Dedupe on backup servers using VDO

VDO is now supported as a production feature as of RHEL 7.5. Including it in the cloudboot images would provide native filesystem level dedupe for backup servers, which is a feature that's desperately needed. As VMs are built of a small set of templates, dedupe of the vdisks should have a huge effect on storage requirements. Can you please look at including VDO support in 6.0 LTS.

  9. Add Advanced Edge gateway management

Add a possibility to manage all services (including Distributed Logical Routing) via OnApp

List of services - Firewall, DHCP, NAT, Routing, Load Balancer, VPN, SSL-VPN Plus, Certificates, Grouping Objects, Statistics, Edge Settings

  10. Autoscale vCPU

Currently, there is no option to autoscale vCPUs. It would be extremely valuable to have the option to autoscale cpu depending on usage, similar to memory and disk.

  11. Virtual Server Groupping

Create and manage multiple virtual servers as a whole. This might include the following:
    - Ability to spin up more then one server during the VS creation wizard
    - Group the VS together with a custom name
    - Group by function type, for example web servers, DB servers, etc.
    - Group by application, for example Web1 + Web2 + DB1 + DB2 + LoadBalancer1 + LoadBalancer2 + Redis1 + Redis2

  12. swap partition to local disks

would be perfect to have the option to store the Swap partition to local disks,
Like you create a VM and you give 40GB root partition 8 GB Swap partition on the beginning, would be really perfect if we can assign the local resources for the swap partition(not using the storage)
since live migration on datastore are available this should not be a big problem..

  13. KVM virsh console

Add virsh console support for templates and KVM hypervisors. This would add the ability to fix the VS if there is an error in boot config or kernel image.

  14. FIX CUSTOM ROLES WITH VCLOUD DIRECTOR

It used to work before 8.20 changes were implemented. Then it stopped working. Thats 2 years now with no ability to create custom roles in OnApp for vCloud Director user groups. Why do we even need to request a feature for broken functionality?

  16. User should be able to distribute own templates to other Compute Zones/Regions

We have two main Compute Zones/Regions (different Datacenters/ISPs). Each zone has it own Backup Zone attached. When user builds VM within Zone 1 he's able to make backups and own templates for further deployments within Zone 1. But he's unable to create VM within Zone 2 based on template from Zone 1. Template image doesn't exist in Zone 2.

Please provide the way for User to distribute own templates between Zones (like do.co snapshots -> snapshot -> add to region) for further deployments.

  17. Improved stats for larger end users

We have a number of customers where we allocate them a block of resources and they create whatever VMs they want with those resources, their own cloud so to speak. That can be with resources from our HVs or dedicated HVs for the customer.

Unfortunately there are some basics missing to allow this to work nicely for customers, such as seeing how much disk space they've used from each Data Store they are assigned space on. There's just not enough visibility for lager users in to the resources they have and how they are using them.

  18. nested virtualisation

is it possible that we enable nested virtualisation for The VM's.. On the hypervisor we can create that but when the VM's are created Onapp is using its own templates for VM's..
    why it is needed..
    * provisioning tests
    * testing Hypervisors

  19. Breakdown billing stats by vApp

Display the billing stats breakdown by vApp or by VM by resource. This means that it is reported how many CPUs, RAM, disk size etc resources have been used in each hour by particular vApp on a resource pool.

  20. Ability to share a disk (assign disk to multiple virtual machines)

For cluster environments we need to have the ability to share file system partitions between nodes within a cluster.

We currently work around this issue by creating a separate virtual machine which exports an iSCSI device. This device is then mounted on each node using OCFS2 on the iSCSI target.

This setup does not provide optimal performance. We would like to have the ability to create a virtual disk within OnApp which we can assign to multiple virtual machines directly.

    ---

We would use this in combination with OCFS2 or GFS2 to share data in cluster environments for large website.…
